Object Details

Collection Creator

Asch, Moses
Distler, Marian, 1919-1964
Folkways Records

Collection Citation

Moses and Frances Asch Collection, Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections, Smithsonian Institution.

Scope and Contents note

This series contains correspondence between Moses Asch and the artists that recorded with him under the Folkways label. It also contains correspondence between Asch and non-artists (producers, recorders, researchers, scholars, lawyers, managers, other recording-related associates). Materials included are business, personal, and legal correspondence, royalty statements, sales records, promotional materials and printed ephemera, and clippings, as well as miscellaneous published works, photographs, unissued recording materials, and notes. Materials may also include production-related correspondence. Folders may contain correspondence between the artists and people other than Moses Asch. In some cases, folders contain correspondence regarding legal/royalty issues occurring after Folkways' acquisition by the Smithsonian in 1987. Miscellaneous folders contain mostly correspondence between Folkways and prospective artists and customer inquiries, as well as unissued recording materials.
