Scope and Contents note

Alton Jones recalls the founding of the Anacostia Neighborhood Museum (now Anacostia Community Museum), the qualities that made it unique, how it helped progress African American representation in museums through its original exhibits and programming, and how it contributed to a sense of pride amongst the residents of the Anacostia neighborhood. He also discusses the interactions between the Anacostia Museum and the Smithsonian Institution, and how the museum has changed over time.  The interview was recorded by Erin Miller on August 16, 1991. The voices are faint and there is background noise which makes the interview difficult to hear throughout the recording.
