East of the River: Interview with Sgt. Buddy Smallwood, Anacostia Community Museum Archives, Smithsonian Institution.

Scope and Contents

Sgt. Buddy Smallwood talked about his experiences working and living in Anacostia and southeast Washington, D.C., and the changes he witnessed as a young officer in the 1960s through to the 1990s. Specifically, he talked about the 1968 riots, May Day in 1970, and the rise in the homicide rate during late 1980s to the early 1990s as a result of the drugs. Sgt. Smallwood explained the impact of drugs and crime on the community, particularly the impact on young people and families. He talked about the problems he witnessed in southeast Washington, D.C. particularly in regards to social issues, economy, housing, and changes in family dynamics. He discussed police-community relations; violence in homes and among family members; and gangs. Sgt. Smallwood also talked about his family, particularly his children and where they attended school; why he continues to work as a police officer; what he likes most about his job; and what he would like to see in the future for Anacostia.
