General

For a new house built on Hartshorn Drive in the late 1950s Lois W. Poinier created a design that utilized the natural woodland surroundings of the site. Although there were some formal elements, such as a flagstone patio with a small pond, most of the design maintained a natural, informal feel. Spring bulbs were naturalized in the woods, while the driveway was lined with a variety of shrubs. Native plants also played a major role in the design, including Vaccinium. Images document site preparation and installation (including a very large tree) as well as the completed project.
Persons associated with the garden include: Lois W. Poinier (garden designer, 1956-57) and Jean Burrell Beinecke and Walter Beinecke, Jr. (former owners).
