General
Located in the now gated community of Llewellyn Park, West Orange, this New Jersey property was originally the site of a caretaker's cottage and squash court when it was purchased in 1945. The property was extensively rebuilt several times. The garden was landscaped in 1967 and featured a walled garden with a year-round green planting bed in the center surrounded by a gravel walkway edged with flowers and shrubs. The front of the house was designed with a flagstone patio enclosed by a low brick wall and edged with planting beds. A gravel walkway leading from the patio was framed on either side by the front lawn. The images document construction of house and garden as well as the completed job.
Persons associated with the garden include: Paul and Lois Scheerer (former owners, 1945-1966), Wilson S. and Barbara Elmore (former owners, 1966-1991), and Lois W. Poinier (garden designer, 1967).
