General
This garden was designed by Lois W, Poinier and was located on Highland Avenue in Short Hills. Images document the site before, during, and after landscaping. Stairs and a walk were constructed and landscaping installed in the front of the property. In the back, retaining walls, curving stairs, and plantings were designed to enhance a steep hillside, while a stone patio provided outdoor living space near the house. The hillside was planted with spring bulbs. Along one side of the property a former children's play area was transformed into comparatively formal borders and a central bed surrounding a fountain.
Persons associated with the garden include: Lois W. Poinier (garden designer, 1960-1980s) and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Orcutt Hoyt (former owners, ca. 1958-1962). Mr. Hoyt was the son of Henry Hamilton Hoyt and Anna Orcutt Hoyt (see gardens MA327 and NJ382).
