General
This garden was designed by Lois W. Poinier over a period of years from the early 1960s to the 1980s and was located on Lake Road in Short Hills. Images document the site before, during, and after landscaping. During the 1960s terracing and extensive borders with brick edging were installed to extend away from the back of the house down toward a sunken garden. There, a fountain and paved seating area were constructed and borders replanted. In the early 1980s the upper garden was extended and a new terrace constructed. Especially lovely in spring, the garden was designed for all-season beauty. Lois W. Poinier also designed a garden for the Hoyts at their home in Osterville, Massachusetts.
Persons associated with the garden include: Lois W. Poinier (garden designer, ca. 1960-1980s) and Anna Orcutt Hoyt and Henry Hamilton Hoyt (former owners). Lois W. Poinier also designed a garden for the Hoyts at their Osterville, Massachusetts, home (see MA327).
