General
This garden on Stewart Road in Short Hills was one of two designed by Lois Poinier for Mary Elizabeth Halbach Kemmerer and John L. Kemmerer, Jr. (the second was NJ353). Mrs. Kemmerer was the daughter of Ernest K. Halbach, who in 1948 had married Poinier's mother, Helen Page Wodell. The slides provide long-term documentation of the landscaping's evolution and change after initial installation, which took place over a period of years from the early 1950s to the 1960s. Features include the driveway and front entry area, the patio at the back of the house, a wall fountain and pond on the patio, and flowering trees and shrubs.
Persons associated with the garden include: Lois W. Poinier (garden designer, 1950s-1960s); and Mary Elizabeth Halbach Kemmerer and John L. Kemmerer, Jr. (former owners, ca. 1950-1965).
