General

For this country property east of Pittsburgh Helen Page Wodell designed informal beds of perennials. Adjacent to the house were a flowering dogwood, low boxwood hedges, and an espalier. A rail fence separated the garden area from adjacent fields and woods. Although the garden's location was given as "Rolling Rock" when the images were donated, this is the name of a private club in Laughlintown, PA. Since the property was likely in the vicinity of the club, Laughlintown has been used as its geographic location.
Persons associated with the garden include: Helen Page Wodell (garden designer) and Mary Graham McCargo (1880-1969, former owner).
