General

Before and after images document this multi-faceted design and installation project dating between about 1956 and 1960. One part of Lois W. Poinier's work involved creation of three levels of grass terracing with a stone retaining wall and stairs. Providing a space for outdoor living, the terraces were accented by azaleas and included one of Poinier's signature fountains. A more significant reshaping of the site resulted in the construction of a swimming pool carved into the hillside. Additional retaining walls and dramatic stone stairs were constructed and the remaining hillside above the pool was planted with naturalized daffodils and shrubs. Utilizing a natural rock outcropping near the pool as a backdrop Poinier created yet another garden area of low plantings, lawn, and a sculpture of a childlike Diana with bow and arrow and squirrel. One image shows the front of the house in spring.
Persons associated with the garden include: Lois W. Poinier (garden designer, circa 1956-1960) and Mrs. William Hunter (former owner).
