General
In 2015 when the current owners acquired this one-third acre property there were mature trees growing in neighbors' backyards that gave them privacy and left sunny space for planting. They added fencing around the perimeter and tackled a long border on the lawn side of a low stone wall that was overgrown with mint. Some rose bushes were transplanted for more pleasing groupings, and a birdbath was added to the border for a focal point. The new plantings were chosen to attract butterflies and other pollinators, and include catmint, swamp milkweed, herbs in containers, serviceberry, dwarf pine and spruce, and hemlock. There is a planting bed on top of the wall as well as more beds around the garden. An interest in native plants determined the installation of purple coneflower, butterfly weed, mayapple, Joe Pye weed, beebalm, and Northern Sea oats among others. Nonnative flowers in the garden include columbine, astilbe, lady's mantle, shasta daisy, and peony. Annabelle hydrangea is featured in the front and back gardens. Annuals are planted for seasonal color in the back garden and in urns in front of the house.
Persons associated with the garden's design: Barbara Rosborough (horticulturist and garden designer, ongoing); Anne Frank (owner, 2015-).
