General

This 24 x 50 foot garden was established in 2000 by the current owner. The property was previously a vacant lot where coal was stored. The design of the garden was intended to have turn of the century characteristics such as trellises, statues, armillary spheres, and compasses. Many of the brick and sandstone elements, including the brick patio, were constructed using materials salvaged from a nearby house demolition. The patio area was purposely built 18 inches lower to visually expand the space. The various design elements involved in the patio were inspired by the owner's ancestry. The circular shape of the patio was meant to mimic a circular Greek key. A large compass in the center of the patio is meant to honor the owner 's grandfather who worked as a fisherman. The patio also features a triquetra and sundial symbols. A small koi pond and water garden is located next to the patio. Various rock gardens line the patio and pond, creating a visual contrast to the smooth lawn in the background. A vibrant turquoise arbor marks the entrance to the upper lawn area. A cutting garden is located along the right fence and features a stone bench and various stone sculptures. This area also features a bird bath and a gazing ball. Beyond the cutting garden is a circular stone fountain. The ground covering here is mulch with multicolored pansies lining the lawn. Along the left fence is a dense rose garden bordered with a winding low hedge. Along the edge of the house is the owner's container, herb, and kitchen garden.
Persons associated with the garden include: Tsambiko Capperis (garden designer, 2000-2020).
