General

In 1970, an acre of land was purchased in Nantucket. It was covered with scrub oak, beach plum bushes and pine trees. The house, Blue Fish Inn, was built in the northeast corner. The garden was created around the house. A lawn and herbaceous border were enclosed first with pine trees. When the trees succumbed to the pine beetle, a decision was then made to plant only trees that thrived on the island and to surround the property with flowering trees. The owners surrounded the entire garden with a four foot solid wooden fence. White Hibiscus syriacus 'Red Heart' was planted around the perimeter of the garden and Kwanzan Japanese cherry trees were planted along the border of the road. Ten Bradford pear trees were planted inside the southern boundary. In 1990, the garden was extended to surround a swimming pool and a new small cottage named Beach Plum Cottage. To hide a required chain fence, the owners planted honeysuckle, Lonicera periclymenum, on the pool side of the Althea hedge.
Persons and organizations associated with the property include: Russell Pope (landscape gardener, 1970); Michael Glowacki (landscape gardener, 1990).
