General
The Palace was built in 1767-1770 as a government residence for the Governor. In 1775, the house was accidentally destroyed by fire during the Revolutionary War. The west wing from the original structure remained. In 1945, the Tryon Palace Commission rebuilt the palace with detailed plans that were found in New York. However, plans for the grounds were never found and Morley Jeffers Williams, landscape architect, reconstructed the gardens based on the period. Image is the property of Tyron Palace Complex.
