General
A 17-acre property with formal gardens on three sides of the French and Palladian style house, designed by the owner, landscape architect Diego Suarez, in 1952. The house was approached from a long driveway to a rectilinear white gravel courtyard bordered by lawn surrounded by a tall hedge of clipped yews. Other gardens include a sunken rectangular reflecting pool behind the house. There is a horseshoe shaped alleĢe of 80 linden trees. Clipped yew hedges formed the base around other stands of trees, demarcated entrances, and in at least one instance were given a whimsical shape. The rectilinear courtyard was echoed by straight-sided containers for shrubs or small trees at the front of the house. There were many statues on the roof of the house and on the grounds of the estate, in keeping with its neo-classical design, and a gracefully curved stairway.
Diego Suarez and Evelyn Marshall Field Suarez (former owners, 1952-unknown); Frederic Rhinelander King (architect, c. 1950).
