Yasuo Kuniyoshi papers, 1906-2016, bulk 1920-1990. Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.

Scope and Contents note

Writings include Kuniyoshi's writings and speeches about other artists, art and the art profession, lithography, and World War II. Also found are statements on his own work and extensive notes for his autobiography. There are sound recordings of lectures by Kuniyoshi at the Boston Museum School and Skowhegan School of Painting. Writings by others about Kuniyoshi include essays by Tom Wolf, Elsie McIlroy, John Baur, and Lloyd Goodrich. There is a sound recording of a lecture about Yasuo Kuniyoshi by an unidentified man. Additionally there are many notes on Kuniyoshi and his artwork written by Sara Mazo Kuniyoshi.

Existence and Location of Copies

The bulk of this series has been digitized. Materials which have not been digitized include blank pages and duplicates. The student thesis on Kuniyoshi by Midori Yoshimoto has only had its title page and an accompanying letter digitized.

This collection is open for research. Access to original papers requires an appointment and is limited to the Archives' Washington, D.C. Research Center.
