Born Birmingham, Alabama
Activist and scholar Angela Davis is a leading proponent of Black female power. In the late 1960s, she joined the Black Panther Party and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. However, her belief in the intersectionality of race, class, and feminism led her to eventually associate with the Communist Party. Davis was arrested in 1970 for her alleged involvement in a shootout at a California courthouse. Found not guilty in 1972, this experience heightened her focus on reforming the U.S. prison system. Davis ran for vice president twice (1980 and 1984) on the Communist Party’s presidential ticket before leaving the party in 1991. That year, she became a professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Today, Davis works to abolish the prison system, fight racism, and advocate for feminist causes. This portrait is part of The Black List, a series that recasts the term to celebrate individuals who have shaped the contemporary Black American experience.
