Summary

A painting of an aerial view of the Smithsonian Institution buildings on The Mall in 1933. The buildings visible are the Smithsonian Institution Building, the Arts and Industries Building, the National Museum of Natural History, the Freer Gallery of Art, and in the South Yard, the South Shed, the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, and a temporary metal building from World War I used for the National Air Museum. Also visible is the National Archives and Records Administration building. This painting by Garnet W. Jex was one of nine oil paintings prepared by different artists commissioned by the Smithsonian to illustrate events in Smithsonian history for the Smithsonian exhibit at the Chicago Century of Progress Exposition in 1933.
