Description
This Liberty Issue Stamp depicts General John J. Pershing. He was born in Laclede, Missouri. General Pershing was a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He distinguished himself during the Spanish-American War, later serving as a military attaché in Tokyo and observer in Machuria and the Balkans. He also served as commander at Fort McKinley near Manila in the Philippines, where he elected governor of the Moro Province. Pershing was unsuccessful in capturing Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa as part of the Border Wars in 1916. He emerged from the First World War as a celebrated leader and was promoted to General of the Armies, the highest rank possible for any member of the United States armed forces.
