Description

This Louisiana Statehood Issue stamp commemorates the 150th anniversary of Louisiana’s admission into statehood. The territory obtained statehood in 1812. The first European explorers in the area were from Spain; it was later colonized by France. The land was purchased by the United States in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase. This territory doubled the size of the United States; the area stretched from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. The stamp features an image of a riverboat on the Mississippi River.
