Description

The Postal Service issued eight 32-cent Classical Composers and Conductors commemorative stamps on September 12, 1997, in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The stamps honor eight great American composers and conductors of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Conductors Leopold Stokowski, Arthur Fiedler, George Szell, and Eugene Ormandy are featured on the stamps in concert attire and are captured while in action during concert performances. Expressive portraits represent composers Samuel Barber, Ferde Grofe, Charles Ives, and Louis Moreau Gottschalk.
Designed by Howard Paine of Delaplane, Virginia, and illustrated by Burt Silverman of New York, New York, the stamps were printed in panes of twenty by Ashton-Potter (USA), Ltd., in the offset process,
