Description

On October 20, 1994, the 1994 Traditional and Contemporary Christmas stamps were issued.
Issued in Washington, DC, the 29-cent Traditional Christmas features a detail of Elisabetta Sirani's "Virgin and Child." This masterpiece is housed at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC.
The Contemporary Christmas stamps were issued in Harmony, Minnesota. The 29-cent stamps featured an image of a stocking full of Christmas presents and were available in fifty-sheet and booklet formats.
The Christmas Santa self-adhesive sheet of twelve stamps features a whimsical Santa Claus carrying a special gift for customers who were looking for a cheerful Christmas message. This jolly Santa is featured on a nighttime sky with dancing stars. A sheet of eighteen self-adhesive ATM stamps depicts a cardinal against the snowy background.
The Traditional Christmas stamps were printed in the combination offset-intaglio process by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and designed by Bradbury Thompson.
Designed by Lou Nolan, the Contemporary Christmas Stocking stamps were printed in the offset lithography process by Ashton-Potter (USA), Ltd. Harry Zelenko designed the Christmas Santa stamps, and the Cardinal stamps were designed by Peter Good of Chester, Connecticut. Avery Dennison printed both stamps in the photogravure process.
