Description
This block of four 22-cent stamps featuring American horses was issued September 25, 1985, in Lexington, Kentucky. The dedication ceremony was held in the Parade of Breeds Barn at the Kentucky Horse Park. The ceremony also served as a preliminary event for National Stamp Collecting Month, October 1-31, 1985.
Often called "The Showplace of the Bluegrass," the state-operated Kentucky Horse Park featured more than thirty different breeds and types of horses, mules, and donkeys, as well as many unique exhibits. The four breeds depicted on the stamps were represented in the park and featured in the First Day of Issue ceremony.
The designs, executed in oil using earth tone colors, featured the Saddlebred (lower left corner), Morgan (upper right corner), Appaloosa (lower right corner), and Quarter horse (upper left corner).
The stamps were designed by Roy Andersen of Sedona, Arizona. Art director and typographer was Howard Paine, design coordinator, Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee. Modeler was Ronald C. Sharpe. The gravure process was used. The stamps were issued in panes of forty.
