Description

A 20-cent commemorative stamp honoring the 1984 Louisiana World Exposition was issued May 11, 1984, in New Orleans, the site of the 184-day exposition. The First Day of Issue ceremony was held at the International Trade Mart. The Louisiana World Exposition was held May 12 through November 11.
The fresh water theme of the Exposition is featured on the stamp by depicting a southern bayou inhabited by a variety of birds, fish, and reptiles. The birds included are the anhinga, prothonotary warbler, tricolor heron, and Canada goose. The fish pictured are the chain pickerel, largemouth bass, and golden shiner. Also depicted are a southern-leopard frog, southern-painted turtle, and a Louisiana crayfish.
The stamp was designed by Chuck Ripper and modeled by Clarence Holbert. The stamp was printed in the photogravure process.
