Smithsonian Journeys and CET Offer Program to China for High School Students in Summer 2010

New Program Features Language Immersion

News Release

November 19, 2009

Smithsonian Journeys, renowned for top-quality educational travel for 40 years, and CET, known for its excellent college study abroad programs, have created Smithsonian Studies Abroad—new international language-immersion programs for high school students. These three-week summer programs combine language instruction with cultural studies and are taught by world-class educators. The program to China will take students to Beijing, where they will explore China’s extraordinary past and present.

The program will focus on Chinese politics, history and environmental policies, and offers students an introduction to Chinese language (no prior Chinese language necessary). During Modern China, the program’s cultural course, students will see China through the eyes of key local figures, benefiting from direct contact and interaction with the capital's diverse pool of academics, artists, scholars, business professionals and foreign experts. Participants will have opportunities to meet local Chinese students and learn about China’s social issues, as well as participate in a service project. Student accommodations are located at China’s top-rated Capital Normal University, located just outside central Beijing. During weekend excursions, students will explore the Great Wall and see the famous Terra Cotta Warriors of Xi’an. An optional post-trip excursion to Shanghai is also available.

Registration is now open for the 2010 summer session for students completing grades 9-12.  Scholarships are available for Smithsonian Studies Abroad programs in Beijing; Avila, Spain; and Florence, Italy. Special opportunities are available for high school educators who are interested in bringing a group of students.
