Smithsonian Gardens Reopen Aug. 17

News Release

August 17, 2020

The Smithsonian has reopened its gardens, including the Enid A. Haupt Garden behind the Smithsonian Castle and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden’s outdoor sculpture garden, to the public today, Aug. 17.

The Haupt Garden will be open daily from dawn to dusk, and the Hirshhorn’s sculpture garden will be open 10 a.m.–4:30 p.m. daily. Visitors do not need timed-entry passes to visit the Smithsonian’s gardens.

To protect the health of visitors and staff, face coverings will be required for visitors ages 6 and older in these outdoor spaces. Face coverings are also strongly recommended for visitors ages 2 and older, per guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Signage is located throughout the gardens to reinforce safe social distancing and other safety guidelines for visitors.

The Smithsonian’s public gardens and landscapes cover more than 40 acres on the National Mall and in downtown Washington, D.C. Smithsonian Gardens is currently hosting a campus-wide, outdoor exhibition called “Habitat,” and the Hirshhorn’s sculpture garden is debuting two recently acquired outdoor sculptures by contemporary artists Huma Bhabha and Sterling Ruby. Detailed visitor information is available on the Smithsonian Gardens website and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden website.
