Smithsonian Fiscal Year 2023 Federal Budget Totals More Than $1 Billion

The final appropriation for the Smithsonian for fiscal year 2023, which began Oct. 1, 2022, is $1.144 billion, an increase over last fiscal year’s appropriation of $1.062 billion. The Smithsonian’s Salaries and Expenses (S&E) account—its operating budget—is $892.9 million, and the Facilities Capital account—for major renovations and any new construction—is $251.6 million.
Salaries and Expenses
The S&E appropriation for FY 2023 was increased by $40.6 million and includes a funds to assist with the mandatory pay raise, research program initiatives, support for information technology improvements and $2 million each for the new museums: the National Museum of the American Latino and the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum.
Facilities Capital
The Facilities Capital appropriation for renovations and repairs of some of the oldest and most visited museums is $251.6 million, including $179.4 million for revitalization of Smithsonian facilities. Among the priorities this fiscal year are completion of the National Air and Space Museum renovation and construction of a storage facility in Suitland, Maryland (pod 6).
The planning and design allocation of more than $36 million will go toward future revitalization projects such as the Castle and the Arts and Industries Building.
