Masters of the Ocean Realm: Whales, Dolphins, and Porpoises
October 5, 2001 – January 2, 2002
Hands-on interactives in this exhibition explain cetacean biology, habitat, evolution, and adaptation. Other sections explore the interactions of whales, dolphins, and porpoises with human cultures around the world and take a look at the future of whales and the issues of conservation and protection.
Highlights include:
- A theater showing film footage of whales and dolphins
- Life-side replicas of several dolphins and whales
- A jukebox that plays several whale songs
- A chart and stopwatch to allow visitors to compare how long they can old their breath to the time achieved by sperm whales
- Models of cetacean teeth and baleen, the large filtering device for straining tiny food particles from the water
- Simulated blubber overlying half of a chilled surface to illustrate the insulating qualities of whale fat.
