Maria Martinez: Five Generations of Potters

Maria Martinez of San Ildefonso pueblo, New Mexico, now 96 years old, has long been the most famous American Indian potter. She and her jusband Julian—who died in 1943—created both polychrome and red ware, but became noted for their innovative black-on-black pottery.

The 5 generations represented in the show are Maria's aunt, her sons, her grandson and her great granddaughter.

On view are about 115 pots, water jars, bowls, and plates as well as tools used in their creation.
