This exhibition features more than 200 of the finest examples of Native American baskets from the museum's collection—from baskets used as utilitarian objects to those woven for the tourist market. The focus is on the process of making a basket, rather than the finished object. Highlights include a painted Haida woven hat, Pomo baskets woven by master artists William and Mary Benson, Karok bowls woven by Elizabeth Hickox, and a rare 19th-century Chumash presentation basket.
