This retrospective of the work of Earl Cunningham (1893-1977), one of the premier folk modernists of the 20th century, features 50 of the more than 400 canvases painted during his lifetime. In his imaginary landscapes, he combined flat space with brilliant color to create sophisticated compositions with complex meanings about the nature of American life. In his make-believe landscapes, he painted New England cottages along the edge of Florida swamps and pink flamingos along the shoreline of the Maine coast.
