240 New Orleans, La Nov 12, 1874. Garrett, H.A. Atty at Law St Joseph, La. Sir: I have to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 5' inst and in reply thereto you are respectfully informed that should your clients (claimants) present themselves to me at Natchez with affidavits properly executed and possess the ordinary knowledge of the military history of the soldier upon whose service the claims are based, the presence of witnesses is unnecessary. My engagements will not admit of my visiting St Joseph at this time. Any claimants who may come to Natchez from Tensas parish will be extended every facility possible in the payment of their claims. New Orleans La Major: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of even date with your check No 24374 on the Assistant Treasurer of the US in this city, in my favor, for $234 55/100, being to pay claim of Joseph Washington, late pvt Co G 49" US.C.T. Extract from list, confidential paper, Discharge certificate and letter from the A.G.O. pertaining to this claim accompanied your letter.
